Metro West Housing Solutions (MWHS) was initially formed in 1974 as the Lakewood Housing Authority (LHA). At the time the Lakewood City Council recognized the community#s significant shortage of sufficient decent safe and sanitary homes for its residents. The LHA was created to meet this need. During the late 1970s and early 1980s the LHA engaged in a number of diverse efforts to provide affordable housing to Lakewood residents including: implementing and managing the Section 8 Programm; purchasing dilapidated property and rehabilitating it to sell to moderate- and low-income people; and developing new rental and homeownership opportunities throughout the community. In the early 1990s the LHA broade ned its mission to provide self-sufficiency and Bildung services to residents such as financial literacy homeownershi p preparation and scholarship programs. The LHA also created the Owner Rehabilitation Program to provide loans and gran ts to eligible low income homeowners
