Öl-Ressourcen bleiben schwer und teuer, tief unter dem Meer oder in Ländern, in denen Retrieval schwierig oder kompliziert politisch. Aber auch neue Entwicklungen im Energiebereich mit weithin verfügbar verflüssigtes Erdgas (LNG) kann helfen, in Nordamerika Stromerzeugung umweltfreundlicher werden.

Laut der Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), gibt es etwa 40 LNG-Terminals dienen Nordamerika, einschließlich 8 arbeitet bereits und der Rest in der Planung oder Bau Stadien. FERC hat die Aufgabe, Standards für die Industrie zu schaffen und in enger Abstimmung mit der Küstenwache, Department of Verkehrsmittel, und einzelne Länder und Kommunen zu gewährleisten, dass sicher und Erfordernisse des Umweltschutzes beim Bau-und Betriebsphase erreicht. Während LNG Reserven sind reichlich vorhanden, der Prozess der Erschließung der Reserven und ihnen die Welt bleibt komplex.

Das Barnett Shale, ein 5,000 quadratische Meile unterirdische geologische Formation unterhalb Fort Worth, Texas, und Umgebung, verwandelt hat der Prozess der Beseitigung von Erdgas in Schiefer-Felsen eingeklemmt. Die Barnett Shale bietet etwa 7% von America's Gasversorgung. Nicht unumstritten, Bohrungen in dieser Gegend verantwortlich sein können für bisherigen leichte Erdbeben in Texas.

Neue Schiefer Bereiche, die LNG liefern konnten, sind bestreut in Nordamerika. Mit mehr geplanter Anlagen an Bord kommen in den USA. und später in Kanada und Mexiko, erhöhte Angebot hat die Preise über fallengelassen 60% seit 2008. In der Zukunft, LNG könnte ersetzen Kohle für die Stromerzeugung, so Verschiebung der Machtverhältnisse im Reich Energie. In diesem Stadium, Niemand weiß wirklich, wie viel Gas aus Schiefer Einlagen hergestellt werden können, so Importieren LNG ist immer noch eine Notwendigkeit. Große Ölkonzerne wie Exxon Mobil fangen an, in und Partner mit Erdgasproduzenten investieren.
