Airtitle Radiant Ceilings Heat & Cool Your Commercial Space While Saving Energy
Steel Ceilings, the manufacturer of the Airtite Radiant Heating Ceiling Systems, had the Airtite product on display at this year's Greenbuild conference. This system supplies both heating and cooling, and is mostly used in commercial properties. Although Steel Ceilings has been manufacturing and installing radiant ceiling systems for 50 years (improvements have of course been made since then), this technology is not as widely heard of as radiant flooring. The Buildaroo News Team interviewed Paul of Steel Ceilings and were shocked to find out how energy efficient this heating and cooling system really is. How it works:
For heating - Hot water circulates through the radiant ceiling panels. This creates elevated surface temperatures, which causes radiant energy to be transmitted to colder surfaces. Radiant energy travels in straight lines heating solid objects such as walls, floors, furniture, people etc. In turn, all these surfaces within the space reradiate to one another until equilibrium is attained.
For cooling - Radiant ceiling panels absorb radiant energy from warmer room surfaces and people, and the water circulating through the radiant panels carries off the heat absorbed by the panels. In addition, the chilled water running through the radiant ceiling panels cools the warmer stratified air at the ceiling, which in turn further cools down the room.
How efficient is it? Since it's an all water system, it's about 20% more efficient than conventional mechanical air systems.
