Audi announces the 2011 Audi Hybrid Quattro Q5, an impressive demonstration of Audi's unique hybrid technology.
Audi just announced the production of its first production hybrid automobile, the 2011 Audi Hybrid Quattro Q5. Audi hybrid technology allows the Hybrid Quattro Q5 to deliver 245 horsepower while getting an estimated 33.6 miles-per-gallon. It achieves this by mating a four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, which leads to a combined performance similar to a V6 engine without the fuel consumption penalties. In fact, at these levels, the new Audi Hybrid Quattro Q5 has similar fuel consumption to the diminutive Volkswagon Golf, which is one of the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid cars currently on the market.
Other interesting features of this new Audi Q5 Quattro hybrid system include a EV-only mode that works up to an amazing 62 miles-per-hour, which is the highest EV-only top speed of any hybrid currently on the market. (The top-selling Toyota Prius, by comparison, can only operate in EV-only mode up to 35 miles-per-hour.) But it should be noted that the onboard battery in the 2011 Audi Quattro Hybrid Q5 will only allow the hybrid automobile to travel about 2 miles before the battery is depleted and the gasoline engine kicks in. Future models may offer additional battery options, and Audi hints that we can expect to see a plug-in hybrid model available in the next few years that will offer additional battery capacity for extended EV-only mode operation.
Unlike the fairly spartan interior of competitors such as the Toyota Prius, the interior of the 2011 Audi Quattro Hybrid Q5 is extremely advanced and incorporates advanced internet connectivity to an extent only rivaled by the Sync system made by rival Ford Motors. In the 2011 Q5 Hybrid, drivers and passengers will be able to use Google Earth satellite navigation systems and other Google services such as Google News and Google Search. The car also features hot spot connectivity, allowing up to eight devices to connect to the internet simultaneously.
