Auto Manufactures Protest EPA's Proposed Increase of Ethanol Content in Gasoline

Automotive industry experts are challenging the impending EPA rule which would allow oil companies to increase the amount of ethanol allowed to be mixed into gasoline from 10 percent to 15 percent to meet their quota for renewable fuels. They cite tests conducted by General Motors, which have now confirmed that a higher blend of ethanol will cause engine problems due to rising exhaust control systems temperatures. These rising temperatures will cause damage to catalytic converters and engine cylinders. Although the EPA claims that only cars built after 2001 will have to use the increased ethanol blend, it is not clear how this will be enforced at self-serve gas station pumps.
Ethanol manufacturers, on the other hand, say most cars are able to run efficiently with the 15 percent mixture and that oil companies are behind the automaker's complaints because they do not want to lose part of their market. But the biofuel implementation manager for GM, C. Coleman Jones, who represents the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, said that the blend will affect many cars, and warns that if the ruling is not delayed till after 2011 "you will be walking, eventually.”
