BP Oil Spill Significantly Worse Than Exxon Valdez Disaster

BP is finally admitting what many scientists have known all along, the oil spewing from their broken well is gushing into the Gulf of Mexico at a much higher rate than had been reported. Newer estimates indicate that the well may have already leaked more than 216 million gallons of oil - more than 20 times the amount from the Exxon Valdez in 1989. Since BP’s efforts at containment have been largely ineffectual, the situation is likely to get much, much worse.
The noisome slick has already wrapped itself around the grasses, reeds and animals of the fertile Mississippi Delta. The heartbreaking images of dead animals and plants is leading to a growing anger at the safety shortcuts taken by BP and their subsequent lack of a disaster plan. The Obama administration is responding to this anger by further pressuring BP to be more open with the public about the true impact of the spill, including posting online a live video feed of the leak.
As public anger and frustration grows, observers will be relieved to hear that BP CEO Doug Suttles is … optimistic - "I’m very optimistic that the Gulf will fully recover.” Unfortunately, no one with any credibility cares to step up and agree.

*IF* it biodgrades, oil takes 50 years in the air and sun, with the right "food" and such, to do so. The only way this is going to get better in our lifetime is if we scrape and scrub and suck and skim it up and out of the water.
BP used Corexit because a former board member of BP is now on the board at the manufacturer of Corexit. See the ProtectTheOcean.com blogs about it!
