Converting Greenhouse Gas Into Carbon Monoxide, a Useful Resource

Carbon dioxide has long been recognized as a harmful greenhouse gas. Recent research, however, has uncovered a way in which carbon dioxide can be chemically converted to a commercially useful gas - carbon monoxide - and in a very energy efficient manner.

Scientists at the University of Michigan in the U.S. and the University of Oxford in the U.K. collaborated on research resulting in the discovery that natural light used in conjunction with a special enzyme bound to titanium oxide converts carbon dioxide into carbon monoxide.  Although it is well known that carbon monoxide is toxic to animals, it is also particularly valuable in controlled processes to produce hydrogen and electricity. Hydrogen is being closely looked at as a source for automotive fuel or as part of a more efficient method of producing electricity.  Carbon monoxide is also used to produce liquid methanol fuel.

As scientists are rapidly discovering, nature’s way is usually the most efficient of all. Recognizing this, Steve Ragsdale, biological chemist at the University of Michigan, believes that the research opens the possibility of developing engineered microorganisms that could use light to perform the same chemical reaction. Currently, genetically modified bacteria are able to use light to convert carbon dioxide into a potential fuel alternative.
