Cypress Envirosystems and Adura Technologies Partner to Bring Smart Control of HVAC and Lighting Systems to Existing Commercial Buildings
HVAC and lighting are the top two energy users in most commercial buildings, typically representing 60 percent or more of the total energy use, and provide the biggest opportunities for energy savings. Cypress Envirosystems' WPT system brings “smart” communication to widely used pneumatic HVAC thermostats at a fraction of the cost and disruption of conventional retrofits, providing an automated method to cut air-conditioning or heating during peak periods. This relieves strain on the electrical grid and reduces demand during periods of high usage – a key goal of Smart Grid implementation.
Similarly, ALPS is a cost-effective system for monitoring and managing lighting in existing buildings that is easy to install and use. ALPS provides a solution that scales from the individual light fixture to a floor, building or even a campus and enables automatic connection to the Smart Grid. The result is designed to reduce both costs and carbon emissions.
“Our partnership with Adura means customers can rely on a single vendor to deliver an integrated solution to control both HVAC and lighting,” said Harry Sim, CEO of Cypress Envirosystems. “The combined solution makes it easier than ever before to connect older commercial buildings to a Smart Grid.”
“Cypress Envirosystems’ wireless pneumatic thermostat is a great pairing for our ALPS solution because the two can be installed simultaneously with minimal disruption to occupants,” said Zach Gentry, Adura chief strategy officer and co-founder. “The partnership helps advance Adura’s goal of extending the reach of its technology beyond lighting to other electrical devices throughout existing commercial buildings. With the current green technology incentives from the U.S. government and utilities, the solution provides an even faster return-on-investment.”
About the Wireless Pneumatic Thermostat
The patent pending WPT retrofits existing pneumatic thermostats to deliver direct digital control (DDC) functionality in minutes. Compared with a cost of $2,500 or more per zone for implementing DDC systems, the WPT costs less than 20% as much, and it may be installed in under 20 minutes with minimal disruption of occupants. It enables remote temperature sensing and control of setpoints, programmable zone control and night setback, automatic self-calibration, BACnet integration with existing automation systems, and enables use with utility Demand Response programs. It uses the Open-ADR communications standard developed by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratories.
Cypress Envirosystems solutions employ Cypress Semiconductor Corp. products, including 2.4-GHz wireless radios and intelligent PSoC® programmable system-on-chip. Cypress is an industry leader in low-power, energy-efficient products.
About the ADURA LightPoint System™
The ADURA LightPoint System (ALPS™) provides a control platform that provides unprecedented management over commercial building lighting. The heart of the system is the Wireless Light Controller that can control one or more ballasts or other lighting loads to provide the ultimate in granular control. No longer does an entire floor of lighting need to be wasting energy only because a few lights are needed. The control platform communicates with field devices such as switches, motion sensors, light sensors and the ALPS enterprise web software to provide flexible scheduling, daylight harvesting, occupancy control, and personal control and load shedding.
Beyond controlling lighting, the ALPS Enterprise database tracks and monitors energy use, carbon footprint, and peak load and shows you when and where you are using energy. It also can provide valuable predictive maintenance information including reporting on failed lamps and ballasts.
