Electronics Manufacturers work to Trace Origin of Metals to Ensure Not from Conflict Regions

Hewlett-Packard has long desired to ensure that their suppliers adhere to environmental and social standards. However recently, as the armed conflict in DRC has gotten worse, HP has found it difficult to confirm the origin of metals purchased from their suppliers. The ultimate goal of HP's supply chain efforts is traceability. The company wants to see an uncorrupted market and a better way to determine the origins of materials. In order to accomplish this task, the electronics industry is hoping that the U.S. government will give grants and funding to create sourcing maps and to audit suppliers. They also hope that their attempt to be more socially responsible will lead other industries, such as jewelry and aerospace, to do the same.
