Finland is going green by creating the world's first green highway. The country hopes that the carbon neutral highway will serve as a blueprint for other ecologically friendly highways across the world.

The 81-mile mile Finland green highway will feature charging stations for electric cars and earth-friendly biofuel stations. Finland officials are considering installing smart lighting, which will turn off automatically when there are no vehicles on the road. Once completed, the green highway will stretch from Turku to Vaalimaa, two cities in Finland near the Russian border.

Finland's green highway will not be off limits to traditional motor vehicles. Traditional gas fuel stations will also be built along the highway.

Finland project managers and officials are currently assessing the project's cost and timeline. The budget for the green highway is estimated at 700 million Euros, or approximately $900 million, and construction should be completed by 2016. No financing has been set up yet, but city official Aki Marjasvaara said that he expects large companies such as Fortum, Neste Oil and Ensto to help finance the project.
