Federal Appeals Court Hears Arguments in GE Wind Turbine Patent Dispute with Mitsubishi
It was just announced that the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit heard arguments in the patent dispute case General Electric's (GE) brought against Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI)
The case centered on allegations that Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has infringed various wind turbine technologies patented by GE.
A GE spokesman released the following statement about the case: "The Recent hearing was about one issue—the protection of GE’s intellectual property. Strong intellectual property rights promote investment, foster innovation and encourage commercial deployment of technology."
"Thanks to strong intellectual property laws we are able to support more than 5,000 GE and supplier jobs in several locations across the United States. The protection of intellectual property is at the heart of job creation, innovation and the development of our clean energy future."
"Each year we invest billions to drive innovation, and encourage the commercial deployment of clean energy technology. Protecting intellectual property rights is essential to the health and growth of the clean energy industry."
"We believe in the merits of our case against MHI and we will continue to protect our intellectual property in the U.S. and around the world."
It looks like GE is looking to fight this case out for the long-haul. Does this signal a new attitude for GE in their efforts to protect intellectual property?
And will other large American companies like GE who have expanded aggressively into Asia follow GE's lead and also begin legal action?
It has been well-understood for many years now that entering into Asian markets meant the likely theft of industrial secrets, but companies have been hesitant to do much about it for fear of the business repercussions.
Perhaps this is now starting to change... Stay tuned as we await further developments in the GE Wind Turbine Patent dispute case against Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.
