Global Warming Creates Demand For Greenhouse Gas Sniffers: Technology to Pinpoint Source of Emissions

picarro greenhouse gas analyzers

One of the major hurdles faced in the Copenhagen global warming summit was how to accurately measure levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, and hence verify that countries are actually sticking to their carbon reduction commitments. It is relatively easy to take a single point source and extrapolate global emissions from generic data. But what about making detailed measurements of a single point source, or determining how greenhouse gas concentrations vary over a relatively small geographic area?

A growing number of firms such as Picarro, a California based firm, are filling the niche. Picarro is on the cutting edge in manufacturing real time greenhouse gas sampling analyzers for researchers, governments, and industry. These analyzers are able to continuously measure concentrations of atmospheric gases and, coupled with GPS technology, produce detailed contour maps showing where greenhouse gases are produced.

The analyzers work by measuring the absorption of laser light at particular frequencies. As each greenhouse gas has its own absorption frequency, by determining the amount of absorption at a particular frequency, both the gas composition and concentration can be determined. In this way, baseline emissions can be determined and in the future, when greenhouse gases are regulated, industry can be equitably rewarded for compliance or properly punished for violations.

I don't even know the way I finished up here, however I believed this put up used to be great. I don't recognise who you might be however certainly you are going to a well-known blogger if you are not already. Cheers!

The sun emits a whole bunch of energy that you see as visible light. It also has some photons of energy that comes as UV (which is why you should wear sunscreen) and infrared light which you can't see. Much of the light that shines onto the earth is absorbed by the ground, water, plants, etc. However, a lot of this light is also reflected away from the earth and shoots out into space.

Some gases can absorb this energy as it bounces off the earth, thus the energy that normally would bounce away from the Earth stays in the atmosphere, heating the earth. You can think of greenhouse gases as a blanket that absorbs radiation that gets shot off of the Earth. Greenhouse gases absorb mostly infrared energy, which is emitted to a greater extent after sunlight bounces off the Earth's surface. Common greenhouse gases are CO2, CH4, etc.
