Got Jatropha Oil? Jatropha may be the key to Bio-diesel
Could a shrub be the key to bio-diesel fuel? SG Biofuels of San Diego is leading the pack in developing Jatropha oil into a product that could eventually replace crude oil. The Jatropha tree, native to Central America, produces seeds that are about 30% oil. The oil is toxic to humans, but has shown in previous studies to make valuable bio-diesel and jet fuel. SG Biofuels is working on a program to manipulate the DNA of the Jatropha tree to increase its oil yield and quality. If the plant can be developed to thrive in soils around the world, it would prove much more profitable and eco-friendly than the limited sources of biofuels currently available.
