In 1939, GE and Westinghouse introduced fluorescent lamps to the world. Now, fluorescent lamps are pervasive in our lives, installed in virtually every commercial/industrial building in the world. Seventy years later, we are now experiencing a new lighting revolution with LED lights.
At this year's West Coast Green, there were multiple LED companies exhibiting their technologies. One such company, Green Ray, manufactures commercial grade, full-spectrum LED lights that according to the company are up to 80% more energy efficient than their fluorescent predecessors. In addition to their LED's energy efficiency, some other benefits mentioned by Green Ray include:
- long lifespan of over 50,000 hours
- no ballast, no starter, no flickering
- low maintenance cost
- safe low temperature
- environmentally friendly with no UV, no mercury, and no infrared
- vibration-resistant, and easy to transport
In addition, since LEDs do not contain mercury, they can be safely buried in the ground and do not need the special handling required with flourescents.
Green Ray manufactures LED tubes and LED bulbs that are designed to work with conventional fluorescent and incandescent fixtures. They also manufacture LED display panels.
