Home Depot $20 EcoSmart LED Bulbs Available Now

EcoSmart LED A19 bulb

Home Depot has taken the lead in offering affordable LED light bulbs to the public. Their $20 EcoSmart LED light bulb can deliver 492 lumen -- the equivalent of a 40 watt bulb -- and can produce cheap light for 50,000 hours, or roughly 22 years. This will be a major blow to both General Electric and Phillips, whose 450 lumen LED bulb costs $40 to $50.

The EcoSmart LED bulb -- also referred to as the Definity A19 bulb -- only consumes 8.8 to 9 watts of power and even comes with a dimmer function. The EcoSmart LED is shaped like a traditional light bulb and is completely recyclable because it does not contain mercury.

The bulb is manufactured by Lighting Science Group Corporation of Satellite Beach, Florida, and is only available through Home Depot, although it is already sold off the shelves and must be back ordered.

According to Jorge Fernandez of Home Depot, “If one of our new ECOSMART [LED] light bulbs is installed in a newborn’s room today, it will probably not have to be replaced until the child is ready to graduate college!"

The other day, while I was at work, my sister stole my iPad and tested to see if
it can survive a twenty five foot drop, just so she can be a youtube sensation.
My iPad is now destroyed and she has 83 views. I know this is
completely off topic but I had to share it with someone!

This is a magnificent amoount of bullshit being dumped on the American taxpayer. I can't believe the Feds are going to do this.

I'm seeing no bulbs with a brightness greater than 90 watts. To convert the average house to udse LED's is going to cost more money than people realize. If you assume that a 60-watt equivalent is going to cost $20 and a 100-equiv. to cost $50, you are talkiing from $500 to $1000 to change out the average house.

There are those of us (me included) that need more light as we age. IThis tried to convert a bedside lamp that was 50-100-150 with the largest CFL that would fit, and I could not read with such dim light.

This is going to save electricity - no doubt. But it is going to do it at the expense of having proper light to work and read under.

This is a dim-witted idea - and the pun is intended.

Thank you for the comment. You obviously know a lot about lighting, and you bring up a lot of excellent points. LED lighting is still in its infancy and pricing is quite expensive compared with other alternatives, and a typical payback period on a LED lighting installation may take 2-3 years even under heavy usage. However, there are definitely applications where LED lighting makes sense to 'regular' people and not just the early-adopter crowd and the very wealthy, and it's easy to see that if current trends continue, in time LED lighting will become more and more affordable and the technology will become more refined.

LED screw-in replacement bulbs currently range in incandescent-equivalent brightness levels of 40W - 60W. So the best application for the current models is to replace existing 40W or 60W incandescent or CFL bulbs.

If you are looking for a bright, but energy efficient, bedside lamp, you may want to consider using a halogen bulb. Those can also be found in screw-in models, though they do generate a lot of heat and that may be a consideration.

Regarding CFL light bulbs, although they do save energy, we have a lot of concerns about possible health hazards in case one of the bulbs breaks inside your home, and the issue of disposal is a terrible problem. (In most cities, by law you're not allowed to throw CFL bulbs out in the trash due to concerns about contamination of the local landfill.) The bulbs are full of highly toxic chemicals and it's questionable whether the benefits outweighs the risks in all situations, particularly in homes with sensitive population groups such as young children and the elderly.

I think that CFL bulbs are a decent choice if they are used in an area of the home where they will not be turned on and off constantly, (for example, to use them as front porch lights, hall lights, or kitchen lights), but for reading lamps I would choose either halogen bulbs or incandescents. I hope this helps! And you'll be glad to know that we're now doing in-depth reviews of existing LED screw-in light bulbs, so keep reading and maybe we will find a LED bulb product that fits your criteria.

I just bought three of these over the weekend. I would have preferred a warmer color temperature, but the light quality is fine for kitchens and offices, and I am happy with the purchase. The bulbs dim very nicely with a standard dimming switch. When not used at full brightness, the bulbs do emit a bit of a low frequency audible "hum." (The color was a bit too blue for bedrooms for my taste, and the hum is pretty noticeable in the quiet of a bedroom.) I put them in the office ceiling fan, and will definitely be getting more for the kitchen and living room.

Thanks for submitting your review. Glad to hear from a consumer that this is a good product. Do you have any recommendations for dimmable LEDs you have used that don't buzz?

  18. sslPro on July 14, 2010 at 5:51 pm

This is like buying a nice vcr - ITS ALREADY OUTDATED - its subpar
Let's see where to begin , It uses a dc driver, quality lamps use AC Leds
Its Not omnidirectional - it may be dimmable but not on all dimmers-
The CCT is Not variable - The CRi / CQS #S AREN'T IMPRESSIVE - AND ITS
Dumb ( can't communicate / non addressable) Phone analogy - ITs Like a brick
phone compared to an I phone . Hey LSG will you ever stop selling sub par products?
The SSL products I use don't have those deficeincies, and they have a 5 year warranty - We in the SSL industry laugh at these LEDS - they are 2008/9 technology
While better ones are years ahead this - BTW nice fins - SSLPRo

sslPro, what the heck are you talking about? This is one of the very first dimmable LED A19 lamps available anywhere, and yet it's somehow outdated?? If there's something better out there, give us the link.

      • Bill on October 19, 2010 at 12:56 pm

Yeah... and at the same price too!!!
I bought two, and yes they are a little "white" for the color temp., but I put them in a table lamp, used a gold colored christmas bulb for light diffusion and coloring, and used a lamp shade that has light brown diffuser inside, and like the warm color that I have now. They dim very nicely with my X10 PLC lighting control also!!

      • sslPro on December 13, 2010 at 2:58 pm

Late response its about thermal dynamics-
the science is Heat is an Led killer and
having to use a Dc driver is the big flaw,
but there are 10 - 12 issues with the generation
of SSL- brick phone or smart phone which would you buy in 2011/ as far as links I won't
single out a mfg but I'll make discerning quality easy- If it has fins its using a Dc power supply- DON'T BUY IT - IT'S INFERIOR!!
