Home Depot partnered with Habitat for Humanity to build over 250 affordable, environmentally friendly homes. Home Depot donated $30 million to fund this project. The goal is to demonstrate that green building can actually make homes more affordable to own, maintain and live in from day one. More than 120 Habitat for Humanity affiliates have been chosen for the first round of grants with affiliates receiving $3,000 for homes built to Energy Star Standards and $5,000 for homes built beyond those standards. Participants benefited from the green building through a healthier home environment as well as energy savings, which helped them save money to pay off their mortgage. The goal of this program is to strongly encourage green building by showcasing the benefits on a larger scale.
