Illumitex Square LED Lightbulb boasts lower cost, higher efficiency
Illumitex, a startup firm based in Austin, Texas, has created an innovative LED lightbulb that claims to both cut costs and improve light output compared to current LED bulbs available from companies such as GE.
What sets the Illumitex LED lightbulb apart is its square shape. Nearly all current LED bulbs utilize a circular pattern to direct light, which sends the light in directions that aren't particularly useful to the person needing it. Illumitex states that their LED square lightbulb will be nearly 50% more efficient than a circular LED bulb and cost almost 20% less.
Illumitex's square lightbulb design will likely help to drive sales of LED bulbs into a more affordable realm for consumers, which is currently one of the greatest obstacles to widespread adoption of the technology. While Illumitex's square LED lightbulb outputs fewer lumens than a conventional LED lightbulb, Illumitex claims that the directional nature of the LED light makes up the difference.
