iPad vs. Kindle E-Book Readers – Will the Kindle lose it's dominant position?

April 3 is the day that Apple shoots a cannon ball across Amazon’s bow. That is the day that the Apple iPad e-book device hits the market and formally challenges the Amazon Kindle. At first blush, it might not seem like much of a challenge as Kindle is well established. A closer look, though, indicates that Amazon might have reason to worry.
A market study released Tuesday found that consumers planning on purchasing an e-book reader over the next three months were leaning towards the brand-new iPad.
This is surprising considering Kindle’s platform-friendly software that allows it to work on almost any device featuring a decent screen for reading. This includes consumer favorites such as the iPhone, Macintosh computers, PCs and the BlackBerry.
Conversely, the iPad will run only titles available through its own iBookstore, but that bookstore is likely to have quite a selection. The iPad also offers a larger, color, touch-pad screen with which iPod and iPhone customers are comfortable.
Voracious readers who are also 'green' should be pleased. Whichever device wins out, trees slated for paper manufacture are breathing collective sighs of relief.

Regarding the green readers - No one can really tell right now if the iPad or the Kindle are better for the environment than books made of paper as no life cycle assessment (from manufacturing to the end of life)was made to reach a clear conclusion and too many details are still missing about the iPad and the Kindle to even start guessing the answer.
