Is the Future of Renewable Energy in Outer Space?
PowerSat is one such company that is working on cutting costs for getting solar panels in orbit. A lot of their work doesn't require any new technologies, just cutting down on the weight and complexity of what gets sent into space and managing the areas of deployment.
As it stands, the major limit to getting our energy from the skies is financial, not technological. But, since most new technologies start out with high costs and become cheaper with time and development (the computer is an easy example), we think this bodes pretty well for getting our solar energy from outer space. What do you think? Is space the new place for our renewable energy? Do you foresee getting your solar energy from panels in the sky rather than panels on your roof?
