Is the Future of Renewable Energy in Outer Space?

We've got lot of the large open areas in our country that are great sites for implementing solar technology.  But, they just don't provide steady enough power and are too far from our most populated centers.  Space-based solar power, which can gather energy around the clock and transmit it anywhere, provides one solution to this dilemma. It's something that has been contemplated since as far back as the 1970s, but until now has been prohibitively expensive.  However, with the huge spotlight renewable energy these days, several companies are betting the technology will be in place before the next decade.

PowerSat is one such company that is working on cutting costs for getting solar panels in orbit.  A lot of their work doesn't require any new technologies, just cutting down on the weight and complexity of what gets sent into space and managing the areas of deployment.

As it stands, the major limit to getting our energy from the skies is financial, not technological.  But, since most new technologies start out with high costs and become cheaper with time and development (the computer is an easy example), we think this bodes pretty well for getting our solar energy from outer space.  What do you think?  Is space the new place for our renewable energy?  Do you foresee getting your solar energy from panels in the sky rather than panels on your roof?  Let us know in the comments, and be sure to catch the full article at Ars Technica!

Sure solar energy from space, it works. Just fly a giant mirror into space and reflect the sun down to a fixed point on earth and you have solar energy 24/7, it's doable. A better idea is to have solar panels in Alaska for those days that the sun is shinning 23hrs a day.
