MonierLifetile: Roof Tiles With an SRI of 93 for Increased Energy Efficiency

A very large amount of a home's heat is either lost of gained through the home's roof.  It is therefore very important to properly insulate your roof as well as pick a roofing product that does the best job at reflecting the sun's heat.  One product that does a great job at significantly lowering attic temperature is MonierLifetile's concrete roof tile.

MonierLifetile roof tiles are sustainably manufactured and are significantly more energy efficient than standard asphalt shingles.  They are composed of concrete and renewable materials, require low energy to manufacture and have a life expectancy of 40-50 years, according to the company.  They look very similar to clay roof tiles, and allow you to get that aesthetic at a significantly lower cost.  As a matter of fact, MonierLifetile says the pricing of their roof tiles is comparable to that of asphalt shingles.

Although priced similarly to asphalt singles, MonierLifetile concrete roof tiles' insulative performance far surpasses that of the asphalt shingles.  Since MonierLifetile's concrete roof tiles have a higher thermal mass than asphalt shingles, they absorb and hold on to heat more efficiently and don't let the heat pass into your attic as easily as with asphalt shingles.  If this product is used in a warm climate, it can save around 350 dollars a year or around 30% of an average home's energy bill, according to the company.

Particularly striking at this year's West Coast Green was a white roof tile that the company was exhibiting.  This tile is even more energy efficient than MonierLifetile's other roof tiles, since in addition to its high thermal mass, it also has higher reflectivity as a result of its white coloring.  This white concrete roof tile has a Solar Reflective Index (SRI) of 93, and for those of you who aren't familiar with the term SRI, the higher the SRI the better because it means that more of the sun's rays are reflected from the house, and as a result the house stays cooler.  This product has similar energy savings to the rest of MonierLifetile's concrete roof tiles, but could save even more if you live in a very sunny and warm climate.
