Nuventix SynJet LED Cooling Device May Help Push Lighting Industry Towards LEDs
LED bulbs use only about one-tenth the energy of incandescent bulbs, and about half the energy of CFLs. So, why hasn’t LED lighting captured the consumer and business lighting market? One issue is that they are heat sensitive. Excess heat can significantly shorten the lifespan of LEDs. It doesn’t matter how energy-efficient they may be if they need to be replaced on a very frequent basis. Thermal management solutions company Nuventix believes they have the answer to the problem in their inexpensive, yet effective, LED technology. If they do, then the lighting industry may be about to experience a revolutionary change.
Nuventix has developed a device called SynJet that uses turbulent air pulses to push cooling air across the LED heat sinks. The Nuventix SynJet device will permit LED lighting system manufacturers to use smaller metal heat sinks, while still offering the LED energy efficiency advantages of 100,000-hour LED life spans.
Nuventix has already gotten some of the major lighting industry players on board with the SynJet device. One of these, Philips, is using the device in its Fortimo LED downlight module. Other lighting product manufacturers are likely to follow suit. The Nuventix device helps manufacturers emphasize one of the strongest selling points for LED lighting systems - longevity.
