Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid Burns Up the Racetrack
The Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid has been making a name for itself at the Nurburgring Endurance Series race in Germany. The plucky hybrid placed sixth in its debut race but reached the podium with a third place finish on April 11.
Drivers Joerg Bergmeister and Wolf Henzler praised the car for its trouble-free performance during the four hour race. The availability of an extra 120 kilowatts (160 horsepower) at a critical time helped the 911 GT3 R Hybrid zip out of critical turns.
Featuring an electro-mechanical drive system, the Porsche hybrid exhibited better fuel economy than its gasoline-powered brothers. That economy meant drivers needed one less pit stop than the other Porsche contenders. Some observers hope that if the hybrid can keep up its momentum, it will have a chance to run in the American Le Mans Series held April 14-18 and May 18-23.
