Can Renewable Energy Projects Make Southern Israel Green?
Despite bureaucratic obstacles, the deserts of Israel are becoming greener thanks to the efforts of Dorit Banet, the Director of Strategy and Regional Development for the Eilat-Eilot Renewable Energy Administration of Southern Israel. In her former position as head of a local regional environmental unit, Banet realized that to implement green technology, she needed the support of private industry and her strategy has paid off.
Ms. Banet's plans to develop the largely arid and unused regions of Southern Israel to generate solar and wind energy have attracted the attention of entrepreneurs, businessmen and even senior government officials to her conventions for the past three years. The plans not only envision up to 25 renewable energy projects to be launched in the next 5 years, but they also incorporate educational institutions and businesses that specialize in green technology.
