Feit Electric PAR30L 12-Watt LED Flood Reflector Review

Our review of the Feit Electric PAR30 12-Watt LED Flood Reflector finds that it fails to impress.

In addition to its PAR38 and PAR20 LED High Perfomance bulbs, which we have already reviewed, Feit Electric makes a PAR30 bulb: the Feit Electric PAR30L 12-Watt 120V Flood Reflector. This bulb scores high in brightness, but like other Feit bulbs, offers a short warranty and is less efficient than some of its LED counterparts from other manufacturers.

In today’s review, we assess the Feit Electric PAR30L High Performance, 5-LED, 12-watt, 120V (will the names ever end??) Flood Reflector into five components: Design (10 possible points), Light Quality and Details (25), Brightness and Dimming (25), Efficiency and Safety (15), Warranty and Durability (25). We assign points to each section, and at the end of the review, summarize our findings and provide a final rating (out of 100) and recommendation.

Design (6 out of 10): This Feit Electric PAR30L bulb has 5 LEDs producing its light (see photo if you aren’t sure how LED floodlights work) and an E26 standard medium base. The “L” in the name of the bulb stands for “long” and refers to the length of the bulb, not the length of the name (though it accurately describes both). The Feit Electric PAR30L LED will replace your halogen PAR30L, and its ocular lens can be used for close- or long-range lighting. The bulb is a bit longer than some PAR30Ls, however, and fitting it into a small fixture could be a stretch. Be sure to measure the fixture and compare to the length of the bulb (see “Dimensions” below) before making a purchase.

Light Quality and Details (17 out of 25): The Feit Electric PAR30L bulbs have a CRI of 85, which is respectable for an LED bulb, but is still much less than a halogen's CRI of 100. Its color temperature ranges from 3000-3200 K, making it's light output a little whiter than that of an incandescent, but not the bluish light emitted by early LEDs.

Like other floodlights that we have reviewed, the angle of light diffusion for the Feit Electric PAR30L bulb is not as broad as some halogen floodlights. If you are looking for a bulb to light your entire room, this bulb is not the bulb for you. The Feit Electric PAR30L will provide more of a focused light; not quite spotlight, but much more direct than a floodlight that casts the same intensity of light over a wide area.

Brightness and Dimming (25 out of 25): At 490 lumens, the Feit Electric PAR30L emits less immediate light than the 65 watt halogen PAR30 bulb that it claims to replace. However, the technology on lens reflection in the new LED flood reflectors maximizes lumens by casting a more intense beam. This is good for the brightness, but bad for the light quality, as we mentioned in the previous section. Harsh shadows outside of the central beam render the Feit Electric PAR30L bulb’s brightness more of a liability than a benefit.

Efficiency and Safety (12 out of 15):  At 12 watts, the Feit Electric PAR30L LED operates one watt over Philips’ PAR30L LED. That’s not much, but since most people buying this bulb prize efficiency, knowing that a bulb could be more efficient than it is could gnaw at some consumers.

The Feit Electric PAR30L bulb radiates no UV emissions and contains no mercury. That being said, Feit still does not claim “lead-free” status on any of their bulbs. We cannot give them the full score while other LEDs are making lead-free bulbs at similar costs.

Warranty and Durability (13 out of 25):  The Feit Electric PAR30L bulb lasts 30,000 hours and comes with a two-year warranty. Philips and GE both beat Feit’s warranty for their LED bulbs, which could be an asset when you are making a relatively large investment for one light bulb. All LEDs withstand vibration much better than incandescents or CFLs, a benefit that the intended lifespan reflects.

Dimensions and Weight: Length: 4.75 inches; Diameter 3.75 inches

Cost and Availability: The Feit Electric PAR30L 12-watt LED bulb sells for $39.98 at Lowe’s, $54.99 on Amazon, and $48.00 on SOS Lightbulbs. The online price is roughly the same as that of the Philips’ PAR30, and it's about $5.00 cheaper if you buy the bulb at a big-box store.

Overall Rating and Summary (73 of 100):

The Feit Electric PAR30L bulb scores an overall 73 out of 100 or “D+” on our rating scale. Up to this point in our reviews, Feit Electric appears to be the weakest link in the chain of LED downlights.

My wife is going into a nursing program and I would like to get her a computing device but I'm not sure which one is best for her. I'm thinking either an iPad, an Android tablet or a laptop. Which would be more beneficial for someone that is mediocre on technology?.
