Sanyo Lithium-Ion Electric Car Battery Sets New Distance Record
Just in time for Earth Week, Sanyo's electric car battery earned itself a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for “Longest Distance Travel by an Electric Vehicle on a Single Charge,” by making a 345 mile journey on a single charge. The test car was a very compact model of the Daihatsu Mira which carried a total of 8,320 cylindrical 18650-type lithium-ion batteries -- significantly more than the Tesla Roadster which carries only 6,831 lithium-ion batteries.
The little car traveled all the way from Nihonbashi, Tokyo to Nipponbashi, Osaka. It's impressive that the added battery weight was not a deterrent to achieving the highest mileage ever for an electric car.
The company did not disclose how long it took to make the trip nor the amount of time needed to recharge the battery after such a long trek, issues that could make a big difference to consumers. However, this achievement does serve to assure prospective electric car buyers that the capabilities of lithium-ion batteries are increasing every day.
