Solar Industry at Highest Level Ever and Will continue to Increase next year

Solar Photovoltaic Plant

The European Photovoltaic Industry Association (EPIA) reported a global increase in solar photovoltaic electricity (PV) of 6.4GW in 2009, and expects an additional 40% growth in 2010. The EPIA report anticipates that solar power could reach 30GW capacity by 2014. The study ranked the three top solar energy producing countries as Germany, Italy and Japan.

Germany has the largest growth in PV capacity, with 9GW already installed, one-third of which was brought on-line in 2009 with the help of the preferential Feed-In tariff instituted in 2004. Although Germany plans to cut this tariff in 2010, solar power production is expected to increase significantly.

Italy's high ranking was largely due to the 72MW PV farm that will begin generating power in 2010. With the implementation of 'conto energia' incentives in 2010, the EPIA estimates that Italy will maintain its high ranking in solar energy production.

Japan's government incentives for PV power has earned them the third highest ranking in the EPIA report. Currently, Japan has installed 484MWs and will continue their high rate of expansion. Just behind Japan was the U.S., with 475MW currently installed and plans to substantially increase that figure in 2010.
