South Korea plans for Nationwide smart-grid by 2030

South Korea's Ministry of Knowledge Economy released a two-page report outlining their strategy to become the first country to implement a nationwide smart-grid, and their plans are impressive. They are investing $23.3 billion to have all the customers of KEPCO, Korea's only power company, using smart-grid technology by 2030, with the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 150 million tons and cutting power consumption by three percent.
The South Korean government agencies are teaming with industry leaders like LG Electronics, Samsung and the SK Group to develop power delivery systems that can produce a host of energy saving technologies. The report outlined the procedure to have one-third of the households becoming self-sufficient and eleven percent of the infrastructure using renewable energy by 2030. The first test systems will be implemented on Jeju Island. Smart-grid analyst like David J. Leeds with GTM Research realize why it is important for them to make such a commitment, explaining, "South Korea imports essentially all of its energy, so there is a necessity there that may drive Korea to develop next-generation smart grid technologies ahead of the pack."

A better understanding of the distribution grid will be essential to bringing on-line all of the distributed energy resources (DER) that will be necessary. Currently, in the industry there are very few smart distribution sensors available to meet the distribution needs. I wonder if they are planning to home grow all of their technology or are they planning to acquire emerging technology?
