Seeking creative solutions to renewable energy sources has lead researchers into barnyards to collect cow manure, chicken poop and pig manure to discover new resources -- but what about human poop? Scientist believe this infinitely renewable resource could create a 'closed loop system' to power entire communities, if they can just get the public to accept it. Anaerobic digesters in UK trials have proven to be effective in generating biomethane from human poop, and the fuel that is returned to homes and businesses smells just like natural gas.
As long as people continue to eat, human poop will continue to be a renewable resource that could well lead to the long sought after 'no waste holy grail.'
British Gas has partnered with the Scotia Gas Networks and Thames Water to service 130 customers in Oxfordshire with biomethane created from their sewage. Their system separates water from sewage sludge and sends it to anaerobic digesters to create a methane gas. The methane is then activated with fertilizer and processed in a biogas plant that pumps it back into the national grid.
The questions is, will consumers be open to using their own poop for power?
