Tesla and Toyota Partner on Electric Vehicle version of RAV4
While mass production of the RAV4 based electric vehicle prototypes will not take place until at least 2012, Tesla and Toyota are busy collaborating on the new models. Tesla is providing the electric power train for the model, and two prototypes should be delivered to Toyota before the end of July.
The RAV4 has been popular with SUV buyers for its fuel efficiency and available 7-passenger seating option. The new RAV4 line will incorporate the liquid-cooled lithium ion battery Tesla is known for and touts as the most fuel-efficient option currently available for electric vehicle power.
Toyota plans to test the Tesla RAV4 prototypes for durability and quality standards during the remainder of 2010. The first prototype is already undergoing testing. The partnership could provide Toyota with Tesla’s new ideas, futuristic vision, and electric vehicle technology, while Tesla will benefit from Toyota’s years of mass production expertise.
