Virginia Tech Lumenhaus Wins European Solar Decathlon 2010
Virginia Tech's Lumenhaus took the grand prize at the European Solar Decathlon. The Lumenhaus blew away the competition with its ever-changing shape, sole reliance on solar energy, and the ability to connect multiple Lumenhauses together to create infinite possibilities to meet anyone's needs. This was the second Solar Decathlon where Virginia Tech presented their Lumenhaus, but this was the first time the Lumenhaus won first place.
Virginia Tech's interest in solar energy has never waned and the Lumenhaus and the Solar Decathlon have been a consistent priority as Virginia Tech has sought new ways to bring beautiful sustainable living to the Solar Decathlon. The Lumenhaus is bright and airy with an open design that invites people to be closer to one another and to the environment. The floor plan Virginia Tech designed has made 800 square feet seem spacious yet intimate. Of the 17 competitors in this year's Solar Decathlon, the combination of beauty and an exterior that adjusts to changing weather conditions or to the owner's preferences proved to be just the ticket for Virginia Tech to make the Lumenhaus the brightest star at this year's European Solar Decathlon.
