FloDesign Wind Turbines based on Jet Engine Technology display 3-4 times Higher Efficiency
FloDesign raises $34.5 million to begin commercial development of wind turbines based on Jet Engine technology
FloDesign, a U.S. based start-up, has just received $34.5 million in funding to begin commercial development of wind turbines based on jet engine technology. FloDesign says its turbines are 3-4 times more efficient than traditional open-fan turbines.
Major venture capital investor Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers led the funding round, and “was joined by ... a Goldman Sachs managed investment fund, Technology Partners and VantagePoint Venture Partners.” In addition, FloDesign recently received an $8.3 million grant from the US Department of Energy.
Other than the increased efficiency, FloDesign says that the advantages of its turbines' blades include: easier manufacture and shipment as a result of their smaller size, ability to place blades closer together than in traditional wind turbines and the blades align themselves with the wind.
