YKK AP enerGfacade Commercial Window & Curtain Wall


YKK AP manufactures fenestration products for commercial and residential use. At this year's Greenbuild conference, YKK AP displayed products from their enerGfacade family. The Buildaroo News Team spoke with Mike from YKK AP about two new products the company just launched: the YOW 350 XT commercial casement window and the YCU 750 TU unitized curtain wall. Both these products have great thermal performance and U-values between .35 and .37 in their framing - which means you get this level of insulation with standard glass, and significantly higher insulation with a better insulating glass. Some information about the products on display:

YOW 350 XT Commercial Casement Window

- has a U value of 0.35 utilizing standard industry glass and glazing. There is a wide thermal gap and an air barrier to minimize convection within the air cavities.

- U value of 0.35 is very low for a casement window and exceeds many building codes and next year's ASHRAE standards.

- The  U value of 0.35 is using standard glass.  With more efficient glass, the U value could go down to  0.31.

YCU 750 TU Unitized Curtain Wall

- U value of 0.37

- uses a polyurethane thermal barrier to minimize energy transfer.

- first product in the U.S. that utilizes a polyurethane thermal barrier, according to company

- can be installed very easily - the unit is simply loaded onto the anchor and pointed down into the insulation.  As a result contractors can turn a building over quicker utilizing this system.

    Tom - you’re right. U-values in the .35 range are not unprecedented in "windows" when you use that term in a general sense. The key to our innovation is the accomplishment with aluminum as the framing material and the use of standard, 1" Low E insulating glass versus high performance or triple glazed or gas filled units. Generally speaking and for numerous reasons, aluminum remains the dominant and preferred material for commercial or institutional construction vs. PVC, fiberglass, or wood. Of course there are various lobbies on "preferred" materials but that is a subject for another day :) None the less and once again, the innovation here is the accomplishment of the U-value referenced in aluminum using standard glass. In this context the 350XT is indeed the most energy-efficient commercial aluminum window in its class.

    I may be mistaken, but I do not believe a U value of 0.35 to 0.37 is a low U value, especially for a good casement design, but only a typical builder grade mid line residential replacement sash equivalent U-value for PVC vinyl sash construction with double glazing, argon/krypton gas fill and single film.

    E.G., I have seen replacement sash U-values offered at 0.19 for very good quality double hungs, and anything that can be accomplished in a double hung can be better in a casement because casement design is fundamentally tighter with less air infiltration than single or double hung or sliders. But cost is also a factor and the asking sales price for these double hung units was over $1,000 per unit which I felt was rediculous so I did not even inquire about a casement, but merely escorted the scamman out of the house.

    PassivHaus promotes the ethic of a well sealed building shell with energy exchange ventilation (intake makeup air preheated by exhausted interior air via heat exchanger, and the PassivHaus window standard is a minimum 0.15 U value, typically triple glazed, gas filled with interior film.

    Throughout Europe, most northern countries only use casements because they seal tighter than any sliders of double/single hung designs, because the closing levers seal all edges. Double hung certainly does not.
